North Wales Meet Report

All members and guests attending the meet arrived Friday night except Paul Grinnell and Delphine Leroyer who opted to stop for the night at Paul’s parents in Birmingham. They finally got to the hut around midday Saturday.

Saturday

Henry le Fleming, Jane Kilmartin and Phil Goodswen went mountain biking at Coed y Brenin. For Henry it was his first time with SPDs! By the end of the day they had clocked up plenty of offs and muddy wipe-outs, including a particularly spectacular and (fortunately) short flight over the handlebars by Jane. Thankfully no one was hurt….. although Henry was complaining about a great discomfort in his nether regions that he blamed on an uncomfortable saddle. By the time they had finished they were so caked in mud that they didn't attempt another trail and went to the tea shop instead.

Simon Atkins, Sarah Glover, Hilary Davidson, Juan and AG did the Snowdon horseshoe. They found snow at the top of Snowdon and caught a shower on the way down to the Pyg track. This was Simon’s tenth circuit of this classic walk and he is yet to get a view from the top of Snowdon. AG didn’t have gloves and came back with pink and puffy hands and Juan didn’t have waterproof trousers so he was a little cold at the end. The others were all sensibly overdressed. A quick stop at Llanberis for some gear and food shopping and back to the hut.

Catherine Billson and Andy Smith looked at the weather and decided on a scramble up Tryfan’s North Ridge rather than going climbing. This proved to be a good decision because it started “chucking it down” at about 2pm. They got so wet that they no longer cared about wading thigh deep in the welsh bogs.

Paul and Delphine went on a ride on their roadie bikes and came back last of all having covered a mere 35k! No explanations given.

Zoë, Jules and Ian went on a bimble apparently (no further details available).

Owing to a lack of nearby hostelries, everyone spent the evening in the hut. Phil and Jane (equipped not only with fresh basil but the whole plant with pot to boot) cooked dinner for everyone! And very good it was too. A big Thankyou from everyone.

Sunday

Simon and Hilary did the North Ridge of Tryfan followed by the Bristly ridge behind it, returning quickly by the scree run to the valley. Another excellent walk/scramble - this time in glorious (if cold) sunny weather. Five hours of almost continuous scrambling, plus the scary jump between Adam and Eve.

Henry, Juan and AG went for some easy climbing/scrambling at Idwal slabs where they climbed the prominent wide crack up the face. Henry and Juan were climbing alpine style while AG soloed. However, two thirds of the way up he was forced to tie on to the rope as the rock got pretty wet. From the top of the slab they scrambled to the top of the ridge and across to ???? Ridge. Again Henry and Juan climbing alpine style and AG soloing, although this time the rock was nice and dry. They than walked across the top of the ridge towards Devil’s Kitchen and back down the path to the car park.

Jane and Phil were also at Idwal Slabs and did some scrambling (up a waterfall!) and some walking. They then went gear shopping Betws-y-coed.

Catherine and Andy went up Snowdon (Andy's first time) by Crib Goch. There were not too many people around and they were rewarded with clear weather and fantastic view from the top. The only complaint was that the café was closed so Catherine could not have the hot chocolate she was looking forward to.

Many thanks to AG for organising.

The End.
