A small but perfectly balanced meet consisting of precisely two climbers and two walkers, although it has to be said that there was not a lot of climbs climbed or walks walked. The walkers (Jane Makower and Sarah Waldram) arrived early on Friday, did some walking and opted to stay in B&B in Holyhead. The climbers (Andy Etheridge and Steve Melvin) arrived late and set up camp in Rhoscolyn. Castel Helen

Saturday dawned dry but very windy. Andy and Steve ventured over to Gogarth Main Cliff "just to have a look, 'cos it's bound to be too windy to climb" and ended up doing Central Park (HVS). Topping out in a gale was reminiscent of Scottish winter climbing (without the snow). Feeling a bit battered by the conditions, they retreated to the cafe for refreshments, before climbing Blanco (HVS) on Castel Helen cliff above the crashing sea.

Meanwhile, Jane and Sarah embarked on a shortish amble round North and South Stack in the morning, followed by a longish sleep in the afternoon.

Surprisingly, we all meet up in the pub in the evening, where we were joined by Joanne Pena (Newcastle branch) and friend. Jane would like to point out that Sarah and herself walked to the pub, whilst the Climbers drove.

On Sunday Sarah and Jane ambled around the flattish coastline at Rhoscolyn, followed by a roast lunch on the coast just outside Amlwch. Beaumaris Castle was viewed later in the afternoon - a magnificent 13th century fortification for those who are interested in such things. "Out of season with dry sunny weather the island was a quiet haven", says Jane.

Andy and Steve set off to far end of Angelsey and abseiled to the start of Britomartis. For those unfamiliar with Angelsey, this is a small platform normally situated above sea level. The route requires the climber to climb down from this ledge and make crux traverse moves above the sea across to the base of the route proper. Whilst attempting this, Steve was completely engulfed by a wave, necessitating a damp escape by prussiking back up the abseil rope. There was nothing for it but to head back to the cafe for tea, cakes and Sunday papers, before the long drive home.
