Welcome to the Marylebone Mountaineering Club, one of London’s friendliest clubs. With fewer than 100 members, you can get to know people over a fairly short time.
We welcome new members of all levels of experience.

We go:
• Climbing
• Walking
• Mountaineering
• Bouldering, including trips to Fontainebleau
• Winter walking and winter mountaineering
• Mountain biking, kayaking and more
We organise meets at least once a month all year round, all over the UK and abroad as we are not tied to a club hut.
Climbing – see the Climbing page or if you are interested in moving outdoors from the climbing wall, have a look at our new to climbing outdoors page.
Walking
Through the course of a year we go mountain and hill walking in summer and winter conditions and coastal walking in the summer. There are no official walk leaders but the more experienced members will often suggest a route; bring your own maps along and get involved in the planning. There is often a fast party setting off early and a more leisurely group setting off later on a shorter route. Unlike a Meet-up, people can split up into smaller groups for the day’s activities and come together again to exchange stories in the evening.
Mountaineering
Mountaineering can range from walking and scrambling un-roped on higher peaks where the route may not follow a distinct, wide path to technical snow and rock routes in the Alps. An example of scrambling in the UK would be the Crib Goch ridge on Snowdon.
Bouldering
Some of the venues we visit offer bouldering opportunities such as The Peaks, Dorset, Dartmoor and North Wales. There is usually one and sometimes two trips to Fontainebleau a year.
Winter walking, mountaineering and climbing
The same as in the summer but colder! We go to the hills all year round. On a winter trip to Scotland, ice axe and crampons can be useful or essential depending on conditions. On high and steep ground in England and Wales we often encounter very wintery conditions, as the gallery pictures illustrate. A handful of enthusiastic winter climbers in the club also head for mixed snow and ice and pure ice climbing venues in winter.
Mountain biking, kayaking and more
People also do other outdoorsy stuff on meets: mountain biking, fell running, and when the venue is suitable, hiring kayaks and sometimes horses! You are free to explore the options in an area and come back and tell us all about it. Sometimes the meet organiser will arrange things – for instance kayaking on the river Wye.
Meets
See the Meets page for venues, activities and dates. Look for out for New Members events for those new to climbing outside.
If you are interested in joining the MMC you are welcome to come along to meet us at (almost!) any of the events. To do so email our membership secretary: membership@themmc.org.uk
